"We Build the Ultimate Commuter: The SyCip Java Boy"

"..it didn't take long for the Java Boy to teach us why we should leave our race bikes hanging and take a more capable ride to the office. After just a few minutes aboard the Java Boy, we felt comfortable enough to jump curbs, ride dirt trails, and attack gravel roads with abandon. These are maneuvers that would not be possible on a standard road bike–and great time savers when gas guzzlers gridlock the city streets."

"Big and Small" article featuring 11 "leading talents" in the art of handbuilt bicycles.

"Who You're Looking At: Jay and Jeremy SyCip and their Retro Unleaded.

Why: The SyCip brothers have been building custom frames in the bay area since 1992. Both attended Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, where Jay (left) graduated and Jeremy left to pursue his craft through an apprenticeship program with Paul Sadoff of Rock Lobster. The brothers specialize in steel frames but also work with aluminum, ti and carbon, and do powder coating for all their bikes (and other brands) in-house. Jeremy builds the frames, while Jay runs the powder-coat shop and manages both businesses. 'We get to bounce ideas off of eachother, and at time we argue,' says Jay, 'but for the most part it's an honor to be in business with my brother, Jeremy'."

"SyCip Brothers: Jay and Jeremy SyCip made this Whizzer gasoline-powered board track racer replica just for the heck of it. Motorcycles still had pedals in the 1920s."

Note: This item is not for sale.

Coverage of our special project SUB/ Off Road Cargo Bike in the "2007 North American Handmade Bicycle Show" Review.

"Clever Chimp provides the Stokemonkey power assist, SyCip the frame and integrated racks to haul whatever cargo and party supplies you want, to wherever they need to go. The $8500 price tag as shown is less than a car – and that's what it's meant to replace."

Some images from an article covering the 2007 North American Handmade Bike Show.

"SyCip showed this modern take on an '80s mountain bike. With modern angles, drivetrain and disc brakes it'll actually ride pretty well. Note the bullmoose bars, pennycapped seatstays and funky fork crown".

"SyCip had one of the most integrated town bikes with brazed on racks and a built in cocktail set in a lockable box".

Outside Magazine Buyer's Guide, 2006 Annual

"An all steel hardtail is brazenly retro, but the Diesel earns plenty of style points with it's signature seatstays and the gleam of the metallic-red Phil Wood hubs against the frame's luminescent jade finish. And the ride is as good as the aesthetic–all quick turns and hard charging."

Jeremy shared the spot light with 8 other frame builders in a review of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. "In Good Hands. Emphasizing grace and craft over technology and marketing, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show enters its second year."

"They [Jeremy and Jay SyCip] blend classic techniques with modern materials, working with steel, titanium, aluminum and carbon fiber, and finish everything with a dedicated and careful style that is uniquely their own."

"Upright and Outta Sight. New commuter bikes pack fresh features in familiar frames."

"Eye Opener. SyCip Designs' JAVA BOY sports a frame that is built to your body measurements, then fitted with high-end components you choose to suit your needs, like the bentwood fenders and hand-built rack on this model....Find it at FW Custom, Chicago."

Review of the SyCip Double Dribble "Stuff. Reality Tested Product Reviews"

"Given that SyCip knows my measurements better than I do myself, I expected to be able to assemble the Double Dribble, hop on and go without any of the usual fuss. I wasn't disappointed."

"I can usually come up with one 'feel' comment per bike, and with the Double Dribble 'balanced' came to mind. If not noticing your bike when you ride is a sign of a good fit, this bike fits like a glove."

Bicycling Magazine, 4/04
Review of the SyCip Pave Carbonated "Italian flair interpreted by NorCal artists"

"The SyCip brothers, Jay and Jeremy are Artists. Genuine went-to-art-school artists. Perhaps that's why these guys have consistently turned out some of the best-looking and most interesting bikes around - remarkable when you consider they don't care too much about the technological horse race."

To say that this year's show was inspiring would be an understatement. Words just can't explain how proud we were to be in the mix. The amount of creativity and enthusiasm reminded us why we keep going at it.

There are a ton of great photos and write-ups out there. cyclingnews has a nice gallery tour and the nahbs show site has some photos from Saturday and Sunday. bikeportland.org's server has been down for hours but be sure to check back when the dust settles.

Next year? See you in Indianapolis! Urban Velo tells us why.
